Project blog

Phew!

Okay, just submitted my first pull request on GitHub!

I have been hearing for awhile that I should contribute to other projects, but I just felt not ready, not ready. Luckily, a supportive friend eventually just said "Look, why don't you do this one?"

It was a nice little issue. . .

Oh boy. I just came across this discouraging reddit thread wherein a bunch of people basically say that having a CS degree is super important for breaking into the industry.

I know. . .

Hands-on learning
Friday 12/01/2017
Project blog

Happy December! Only 13 more days in France . . .

I've been thinking a lot about my learning process recently. I attended a workshop once about working on teams. The workshop runner had us take a personality test, and then based on that test, had us simulate how long each type of person. . .

CS50 Week 2
Monday 11/27/2017
Project blog

The Week 2 problem set for CS50 was a little frustrating, as I started to realize that the amount of C covered in the course lecture is not really enough to complete the problem set.

What compounded my frustration was that it seemed like the lecture covered the very basics (i.e. what is an. . .

Editing a Jekyll Theme in 2017
Tuesday 11/21/2017
Project blog

I'm trying to set up a Jekyll site to showcase some of my artwork. I last used Jekyll about a year ago, and was a little baffled by all the options but understood the basic gist of editing the theme files to customize.

(After all, the best part of having a website is not contributing to it,. . .

Automating workflow with Gulp
Wednesday 11/15/2017
Project blog

You know how there's that thing where if you show kids a vegetable 5 times and then get them to taste it 3 times or something, they'll like it? (Ha, that seems unlikely.)

I wonder if there's something the same for me for getting into new tools. I have seen Gulp mentioned in a bunch of job. . .

CS50 Week 1
Tuesday 11/14/2017
Project blog

C syntax seems pretty familiar after spending the last couple years alternating between python, JavaScript and ruby. Although it's a pain having to put the curly braces on a new line when it's otherwise so similar to JavaScript...

There must be something I don't like about "fun looking". . .

The game plan
Tuesday 11/14/2017
Project blog

Okay--here is the tentative game plan for the next month to month and a half (if I can get much done over the holidays).

  1. Learn React
    • Make 2 projects in React
  2. Learn React Native
    • Release some sort of app to the Google Play store
  3. Proceed with the CS50 class on EdX (I started. . .

One month to go
Monday 11/13/2017
Project blog

Only one month left of my three months of uninterrupted coding time.

Okay, when I am back in the U.S. I can keep practicing coding while I look for a job, but one of the benefits of being in a foreign country where I don't know anyone is that there is not much to do besides code and stick to. . .

Javascripting the night away
Friday 11/10/2017

I've been brushing up on my javascript by making this little lemonade stand game.

I started out by setting everything to fixed pixel widths and absolute positioning of menu elements. Today I adjusted all the css and markup to make the game much more. . .

Back in business
Sunday 11/05/2017
Project blog

We spent the last week traveling around Brittany, France.

I did bring my laptop, but spent most of the free hours editing photos rather than working on code. The backlog of travel photos I have is enormous, and I had to spend a lot of time pruning duplicate shots from the files to free up. . .

Text-based adventure time

A text-based lemonade stand game!

I wanted to practice a little Ruby without the distraction of building a website around the code, so I spent yesterday writing a little text-based version of the classic lemonade stand game.

Good for practicing:

  • Accepting user input and parsing. . .

Rails + Javascript + Heroku = Sadness
Wednesday 10/18/2017
Tea

It started out so well

I wrote a simple little jquery script for my Rails app to make a hidden element appear and slide down (the user input form on my Dog Informant app.) It worked great on local host! And then I deployed it to Heroku, where it did not work.

So I started diving into. . .

Filters in Rails!
Thursday 10/12/2017
Bird

Two of the projects in my to-do pile include a filtering tool of some sort as their main feature. (DogInformant app will help people choose a dog breed, and the Broadway Show app will help people figure out which play to watch in New York City.)

I started with the Dog Informant app, so that. . .

Rails helper method to output html
Tuesday 10/10/2017
Bird

So I'm working on an app project, "Dog Informant" which provides information on a wide variety (ok, only 10) of dog breeds.

Each dog's "show" page lists rankings for certain characteristics, such as "kid friendly" or "trainability." I wanted to represent the. . .

Combining HTML Partials
Monday 10/09/2017
Bird

I've encountered static sites generated from "partials" in Jekyll and Hugo. If you're not familiar with these, they are essentially set up to help you create a static blog--rather than pulling posts from a "posts" database like you would do with a Rails app (or how something like wordpress. . .

Wrestling with Bootstrap
Saturday 10/07/2017
Bird

During the week, I try to stay focused on learning rails, but this weekend I let myself just mess around with the CSS for my two websites, plus a template for a rails website I'm going to make for a friend this week.

As always, messing around with CSS reminds me of how difficult it all is! I. . .

For those who don't know, I'm on an extended vacation in France, during which time I'm trying to learn as much web development as possible!

During my first week, my grand plans seemed in danger, since I spent the entire first day I was here (a Tuesday) either in the process of actually. . .
